On Friday Justice Cheeseman of the Federal Court of Australia handed down judgment in the Forum Finance proceedings. The case involved an audacious fraud masterminded by Bill Papas against four financiers who together advanced about $500 million to Forum Group companies. Her Honour accepted the financiers’ case on the basis of the meticulously detailed evidence of the fraudulent transactions led by the financiers and also accepted the comprehensive tracing evidence which demonstrated the tainted proceeds were channelled through various entities to fund property purchases and an extravagant lifestyle.
Catherine Hamilton-Jewell, led by Jeremy Stoljar SC and Victoria Brigden, appeared for two of the successful financiers. Catherine was instructed by Caitlin Murray and Michael Hughes of MinterEllison.
